Release 9: Dear Jane. Block H12: Hannah Lou's Hearts

Good morning everyone! Welcome back to our peicing journey. Finally we moved to our first applique block! Congratulations. This block will be a small relief before two more complicted blocks we are going to piece this week.

Please note that applique is a technique that could be realized in several ways. You can hand applique, machine applique, use fusible web or use freezer paper - it is all up to your preferences and taste, and for sure experience. Today I am going to show the easiest way to do applique, but you are welcome to realize this block in your favourite manner.

Well, let's go.

Today you will need:

- one 5'' background square (I cut 6'' for myself, as far as I just love to trim the block to an ideal square when it's made)

- one long 3,5'' x 12'' colored strip

- fusible web (also known as interlining, vlieseline...)

- thread of the closest color to your colored fabric

- textil adhesive spray

I just love use interfacing while making applique. It makes fabric thicker and more stable what guarantees you a nice flat block in the end. So, first of all I attach the interfacing to fabric with hot iron. Careful! - fusible side goes to the back of your fabric. I attach interfacing to both BG square and a colored strip.

Then prepare a paper heart shape which needs to be 3'' wide and 1,5'' high.

Trace 4 hearts onto the colored fabric...

 ...cut them out

Find a center of your BG square. Mark it.

Put the fabric hearts around your block center.

Then fix their position with adhesive (any textil glue or pins)

Choose an applique stitch on your machine. If you do not have this special one, use a narrow zigzag.

Slowly and very carefully stitch down all hearts, one by one. Try to use the same color or invisible thread.

Press, trim, keep and be proud of yourdelf! We did it!
